You’re My Best Friend – The Once (Queen)

Today I want to introduce a band called The Once that I stumbled upon a few years ago while watching TV. For starters, it is really really hard to re-make a song that is perfect as it already is. So when I heard Queen’s classic You’re My Best Friend on TV played by The Once, I actually ran to the TV, paused it, and had to find out who what when where why how.

Personally I have loved this song for years. This song was actually written by Queen’s Bassist John Deacon for his wife Veronica Tetzlaff. It was released in 1975 on the album A Night at the Opera.

The lyrics make you think about the perfect companion. In my opinion, if you have a relationship with your companion, where the other person is also you’re best friend, there really isn’t much more that you can ask for.

As I mentioned before, the song is perfect as it is….the catchy swing feel, electric piano and guitar, the drum lines, harmony and of course Freddie Mercury’s vocals give this song a touch that no other band could have expressed. When The Once released their version in 2011, with a female vocalist and a banjo, I was blown away!
