Clark County Shooting Complex – CCSC

This post is just sharing my first outdoor shooting range experience. For starters, I have been to indoor ranges for years. Most of my friends are gun collectors, of course some a few and some with cases and cases, so naturally I have been around guns for years. However I have only been to indoor ranges, so naturally I haven’t really shot too many rifles. Until now. =)

Although again I have been to the indoor ranges quite a bit, I never really got into guns too much. In fact, I don’t really like handguns too much. I actually had an incident once when I rented a Glock 9mm in L.A and a round fired right when I loaded the clip.

But while at a indoor range in Cerritos, CA with a buddy of mine, we spent some time shooting his .22 Rifle, and I was actually liking it quite a bit.

It took a while after that, but we planned a trip to CCSC (Clark County Shooting Complex) with a AR15 556, and a Ruger 308. To start off, CCSC is humongous! As soon as you drive up to the mountain area, there are completely different areas for Handguns, rifles, skeet shooting, archery, etc….

Even within the rifle area, there are longer range, and shorter range spots. We were in the shorter range spot, which had target slots for 25, 50, and 100 yards. So some people in our area actually were shooting their rifles and their handguns. On the other side of us they even had areas with 150-200 yard target slots.

I wasn’t sure what to expect at my first outdoor range experience. I had that nervous / excited / scared feeling all at once. But once I got there, I saw how seriously they take safety. Before you even get a lane, you have to watch a safety video. Once you watch a video, they give you a yellow card so that you don’t have to watch it next time. They have range employees in all the areas making sure everybody is following the rules. It was pretty easy to follow. You get 20 minutes of firing time, where you are NOT allowed to go past the red line into the target area ( For obvious reasons ). And then once they call “Cease Fire”, you have to unload your firearm and step away from the firing table. If you need something from the table, you must ask the person in charge of your area to get it for you. Again you CANNOT go to the firing table. You also have to leave your firearm UNLOADED.

So if you are finished and want to go home, you have to pack all your firearms and any other belongings during live fire. And then you would wait for Cease Fire, go out grab your target board, and then you can go.

Since we took our own firearms, and our own ammo, we just had to pay for the entrance fee. It came out to about $10 a person? We stayed for nearly 4 hours, so I don’t think they have a time limit either. Sounds like a good price for 4 hours of practice, fun and getting familiar with the firearms, however the firearms and the ammo do not come free. I won’t get into how much the rifles cost, however the ammo runs a little under $2 a round. We ended up shooting close to 150 rounds that day, so that’s $300 in just bullets.

Another pointer for the people who are concerned about the heat. We ended up going on the HOTTEST day of the year. I think the high was 117 degrees that day. Regardless since we went right when they opened, and since there is a big shade covering us on top, it was not bad at all. Of course we felt the heat like no other once we got out of the shade and started walking to the car, but while shooting you will be fine. Even for someone like me who does not do too well with high heat.

As long as you follow the rules, keep your courtesy with the other people there, and the staff, you will have a great time at CCSC. The person on duty in our area actually gave us quite a bit of pointers, and joked around with us quite a bit. Although I have not been to the other outdoor ranges in Las Vegas, I can see why so many Yelpers call this place the best outdoor range in Las Vegas.
